THE FIRST COLONISTS
Hakluyt's Voyages to North America
by A. L. Rowse
First Print The Folio Society, London, 1986. First Printing of Folio Edition. Hakluyt was a young scholar at Oxford when the discovery of the New World revolutionized Renaissance geography. He introduced that revolution in England and , indeed, was a leader of it. He used available documents, good access to the principals in England, interviews with captains and sailors, and use of their diaries, logs, maps and records to write the accounts of their voyages to the New World which are the heart of this book. White made remarkable drawings, water colours, and maps on his trips to Virginia and they are reproduced beautifully here.
